THEY’RE OFF: Students at St Andrew’s College made it their mission to return the annual cross-country event to the school grounds for the first time in five years. More than 700 students competed in the event which, due to campus development after the February 22, 2011 earthquake, was held off-site. School head of co-curricular Denley Jones said the race returning was a student-driven initiative. Ari Graham won the senior girls race while Mitchell Small won the senior boys.

Drug arrests linked to bike thefts „„ ByAndrewKing FOUR PEOPLE arrested on drugs charges could be linked with bike thefts around Burnside High School and Canterbury University. About 25 high-end bikes have been stolen from the school and university over the last two months. Senior Sergeant Stephan McDaniel said a search warrant was executed in Burnside on May 20 and four people were arrested. They have appeared in court facing a number of cannabis and synthetic cannabis charges and

were released on bail. “There were other drugs in the house and we have sent them off for analysis, Senior Sergeant McDaniel said. It is alleged these four are directly linked with the thefts of

bikes from the school and possibly the university. No charges have been laid about stolen equipment yet but Senior Sergeant McDaniel said the investigation continues. “We have seized electronic

WELCOME TO your new look local paper. We try to jam as much news as possible in your paper, this week is no different. Volunteers are often the unsung backbone of the community, whether sports coaches or even volunteers at the local community hub. Reporter Fraser WalkerPearce talks to Volunteering Canterbury’s manager Ruth Gardner who has been at the helm for more than 20 years. She has retired but it doesn’t look like she will be putting her feet up anytime soon. Thank you Ruth for leading such an important organisation. You will be missed. CHOCOLATE CHEWED OVER AT COUNCIL A HEATED discussion was quelled at a city council meeting last week when a councillor was told to “eat a Snickers.” During last week’s meeting, city councillor Jamie Gough joked that fellow councillor Glenn Livingstone should have a snack during passionate discussions over a deputation presented to the

city council. The popular American chocolate bar’s motto is: ‘You’re not you when

you’re hungry.’ Perhaps Cr Gough felt Cr Livingstone needed a bite of chocolate to calm down.

News Ratepayers New community hub plans fund camera CONCEPT DESIGNS for the St Albans Community Centre have been released for public consultation. The current design concept has been developed by the community, alongside the city council and the St Albans community centre working party, using information first gathered in 2010, when an expansion to the previous community centre was being planned. The public can comment on the project by visiting the city council’s website clicking on the Have Your Say page or by filling out a submission form at the transitional St Albans Community Centre. There will be two drop-in sessions at the transitional community centre for the public to come and meet the working party and discuss the project. The sessions will take place on June 8 11am1pm and June 16 6-8pm at 1049 Colombo St. The Shirley-Papanui Community Board will approve the final design in July. Construction of the new centre is set to begin in 2017. The previous centre was demolished after sustaining severe earthquake damage, and

a transitional community centre was installed in 2012. This temporary facility was intended to be operational for two to five years until construction of a permanent replacement could get underway. Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson said the board was excited with the development and progress of the new centre and was looking

forward to the public’s feedback. “Throughout the board’s engagement with residents and community groups there was a very clear desire to replace the old community centre, so the working party was formed,” Mr Davidson said. “Using information from both pre and post-earthquake, a design has been created that truly captures the essence of

St Albans. This group has worked with city council staff to create a concept design, which is now ready for feedback from the wider community,” he said. ByAndrewKing FUNDING TO keep a security camera in St Albans will be provided by a local community board. The Manchester St camera, brainchild of city councillor Ali Jones (right), was installed on April 4 to deter clients visiting sex workers in the residential area. Now the three-week free trial is over, the Shirley-Papanui Community Board has agreed to fund the camera for another month. It will cost $960 plus GST and will be funded from the board’s discretionary fund. Cr Jones said poor weather contributed to the reduction of sex worker activity. “We, as a board, want to see what the next four weeks hold,” she said. “After the next four weeks, I hope to have completed my inquiries regarding other possible funding streams.” ATF loaned the camera for three weeks and set it up on the corner of the Manchester and Purchas Sts intersection.

Veterinary practice

TINKER – THE SURVIVOR There is never a dull moment at McMaster & Heap vets and funnily enough the critical serious cases mostly show up on weekends, or 7pm at night. I’d arrived into work one Saturday to help out and Tinker was in our surgical area, having just been transferred from the After Hours Clinic. He looked terrible ( his face had taken the full impact of a collision with a car) but he was on a fentanyl drip and his pain seemed well managed. Miraculously he had survived and his success story is due to not just our surgical efforts that Saturday but also the events that took place by many people prior to us seeing him. His accident happened Friday night and some great human being saw him on the road and immediately delivered him to the After Hours clinic, which incidentally saved his life. We are so fortunate to have an emergency centre open through the nights and weekends when other clinics have closed. The team there swiftly examined and stabilized Tinker and started him on pain medications, antibiotics and intravenous fluids. Then his owners were contacted as Tinker wore a collar with nametag attached. This means of identification (or a microchip) is so important because without an owners consent we can’t really treat a critically ill patient to save its life. He was monitored and cared for all night until he was dropped off to us Saturday morning. Even though it was a weekend with less staff rostered on, I knew Tinker couldn’t wait until Monday for surgical repair. His lovely, worried owners wanted for us to do “everything” we could to ensure Tinker came home. That’s where our outstanding team need

to be greatly commended, because regardless if any of them had plans that night, they all, without me asking, stayed late to ensure the best possible care and attention was given to a critically ill patient. Tinker was anaesthetized, his skull was radiographed and I repaired his mandibular jaw fracture with wire and his hard pelate injury. He had a massive gnash under his chin that required suturing and he had several broken teeth. A feeding tube was placed in his oesophagus to enable us and his owners to feed him post operatively. Cats with fractured jaws can take weeks to eat on their own. Steve was called in to assess his eyes as they were completely closed over and I wasn’t sure whether he had retinal injuries, lens or corneal damage. Luckily Steve felt there was no ocular damage, just a lot of bruising and facial swelling. Tinker was managed intensively over the coming week, his days spent with our hospital nurses and nights at the After Hours. He needed everything done for him from feeding six times a day, loads of medications to be given, his face washed and he needed grooming as he couldn’t do this for himself. His owners visited him daily and he really loved their visits. He was the perfect patient to treat – he was stoic, obliging and grateful. Tinker was a FULL TEAM effort and I’m so pleased to report he’s home now, lounging on beds, walking around his section, able to groom himself and even eating a little on his own. Steve and I couldn’t do the job we do without the dedicated, caring staff we have. A fantastic outcome and even though Tinker looks a little facially different now, his owners report they have their “old” friend back. Dr Michele McMaster

Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer IT’S BEEN a while since I’ve talked about cooking fires in kitchens but there were five of these this week including a couple that caused quite considerable damage and inevitably one that resulted in ambulance treatment for the house occupant from smoke inhalation. As always the advice is the same. Don’t leave the kitchen when you’re cooking on the stove top. If you are cooking with fat or oil have the lid of the pan, an oven tray or a breadboard always available to slap on the top if the worst happens and flames appear. A quick fix with no ongoing problems or a kitchen on fire with the weeks of inconvenience that involves. It should be a no-brainer really, shouldn’t it? A number of quite odd fire calls featured this week. A fish smoker was found on fire in Barrington Park. A distraught Mum was attended to in Addington where she had locked herself out of the house with two toddlers inside. A lady rang for help because she had found a mouse in her laundry. A crew were called to accident and emergency the hospital to help a young woman whose finger was somehow struck fast in a doorknob. Finally, we had a call to a car fire at

a service station that turned out to be a blown engine and two calls to low hanging smoke that turned out to be mist. I suspect we’ll have some more of these now with winter starting to bite. Stay warm, stay safe!

News Permit parking trial ByAndrewKing CONTRACTOR parking permits will be trialled in Merivale. The city council decided on Thursday it would run a oneyear trial on a section of Holmwood Rd of resident-based parking permits for contractors where there is no off-street parking. The permits were the idea of Merivale resident Dr Stuart Gowland. He lobbied the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board, and said some contractors have vehicles too big to fit on some properties and need to park on the road. City councillor Jamie Gough said the trial was a fantastic result. “The reason we have asked for this is because the current system was completely inadequate,” he said. “The current system does not allow for weather dependant work or projects that run for longer than the predicted time frame.” The way contractor permits will work is still being finalised by city council staff. However, Cr Gough said it will be a very straightforward process.

TRIAL APPROVED: The city council decided on Thursday it would run a one-year trial on a section of Holmwood Rd of resident-based parking permits for contractors where there is no off-street parking.

The contractor would verify themselves with the city council and be issued a permit for its vehicles. The permit would display the registration number of the vehicle to indicate to authorities that the vehicle is exempt from time restricted parking. Dr Gowland is thrilled the trial is going ahead. “It would have been crazy to try roll it out across the city,” he said. “This way we can test the wa-

ters and see if it is good enough to make it policy.” He said there is a similar system operated by the Devon County Council in the United Kingdom, where he got the idea from. The city council will retain its current permission-based system for the rest of the city. HAVE YOUR SAY: Are contractor parking permits a good idea? In Brief RUNNING FOR COUNCIL Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson will run for a seat on the city council this year. He has decided to run in the Papanui Ward. Mr Davidson said he believed the best way to add value to his community is by committing full time as a councillor. Fellow board member and current city councillor, Pauline Cotter, was nominated by the People’s Choice, a Labour aligned group, to run for a seat in the Innes Ward. They join board deupty chairman Aaron Keown in the race for a city council seat. Mr Keown will be running in the Harewood Ward. SMOKE ALARMS INSTALLED Housing New Zealand homes in Papanui have been fitted with new photoelectric smoke alarms. Since February, 633 homes have had the new alarms installed. When the smoke particles entering the chamber changes, the amount of light that reaches the sensor also changes. The alarm sounds when the smoke density reaches a preset level. WORK STARTING Residents of Claridges Rd and Grampian St in Casebrook

will have SCIRT teams in their neighbourhood for about eight weeks from today for repairs to the wastewater system. In Grampian St and in Claridges Rd, sections of earthquakedamage wastewater mains are being replaced which will require trenching of parts of the street. A section of Grampian St will be closed and detours signalled. STUDENT AND STAFF ART SHOW Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students and staff will be exhibiting Thinking in Print in the Selwyn Art Gallery from June 3. Some of these works are part of NCEA visual arts portfolios, where the assessment is based on developing and extending ideas. The focus in the school’s art department is on developing independent thinking. The gallery will be open daily, except Mondays, from 10am to 4pm for the duration of this exhibition. INFORMATION SOUGHT The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has asked city council traffic staff to provide it with a report about installing right turn arrows at the Glandovey, Strowan Rds and Rossall, Heaton Sts intersection.

harity that helps C most vulnerable falls on tough times By Tom Doudney A LOCAL trust which acts as a problem solver for vulnerable, disadvantaged and struggling people around New Zealand said it is in urgent need of funding. SigJaws Trust helps people in a variety of ways, from lobbying for retention of services, suggesting changes to legislation, finding work and housing and promoting innovations. However, project manager Gary Watts (right), who founded SigJaws in 2001, said the trust had been struggling financially for some time and needed more funding to carry on. The trust’s operating expenses were “conservatively” about $207,000 a year and while it had enough to carry on over the next six months, finding new funding was a big challenge. “We have got over 200 clients now that we are dealing with on a day-to-day basis and a lot of these people have slipped through other systems

big-time,” Mr Watts said. One of its recent projects has included working with Canterbury University to develop a robotic arm which would allow mobility-impaired drivers to fill up at petrol stations without leaving the car. The trust had received funding from organisations including the Ministry of Social Development, the Rotary Club of Christchurch and The Lion Foundation within the last year. However, it had been unsuccessful in seeking funding from the Red Cross, the Canterbury Community Trust and the city council. “If our funding dries up it’s just impossible to carry on,” Mr Watts said. SigJaws Trust board member Jamie Hoffman, who has cerebral palsy said Mr Watts had been pivotal in helping him find suitable accommodation after the earthquakes. “People just don’t realise how much good he does out there,” Mr Hoffman said.

Protect our streams This week’s Soapbox is from FendaltonWaimairi Community Board member Faimeh Burke about the state of streams in her ward and what she believes are the factors behind the decline in water levels Once flowing through the north-west suburbs of Christchurch and being a treasure for young and old, streams including the Waimairi and Wai-iti have dried up since March last year. The crystal clear water has given way to stormwater mixed with rubbish and contaminates. The fact that the aesthetics of these streams has been damaged is not the only issue for residents. The effects on fish, bird habitats, recreational values, serious mosquito problems and unpleasant smells are also causing great concern for them. There are various reasons which have all possibly contributed to the disruption of the springs that fed the streams in our city. A significant increase of irrigation consents issued by ECan in inland Canterbury, ECan’s failure to efficiently protect our streams, rivers and lakes from the negative effects of stock damage as well as environmentally unfriendly developments are among the factors which might have contributed to the deteriorating situation. Although we can’t prevent the earthquakes and the damage that they might create and don’t have any direct influence in the amount of the rainfall, we

should try our best to prevent further man-made damages and remedy the existing ones. Forests, grasslands and wetlands act like sponges that slow down and absorb water when it rains. However, in cities, where these areas are often replaced with impermeable surfaces such as roads, footpaths and car parks, water is no longer absorbed by the action of the plants and instead flows directly into streams via the stormwater system. After listening to residents, the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has asked the city council to give a high priority to investigate remedies for the regeneration of the Wai-iti stream, as part of its integrated water strategy which includes the health of spring-fed rivers and streams. It is also time that ECan seriously reconsiders the consequences of its increased irrigation consents and its lenient way of protecting our streams. We can’t afford to do nothing, after all, it is quality of our life which is at stake. •Have you noticed a decline in water in the north-west water ways? Do you agree that more should be done to protect these waterways? Share your views with us, email andrew.king@ starmedia.kiwi

A reader responds to a recent article about St Albans residents unhappy about the $76m Northern Arterial and Cranford St four laning projects: Ian McKenzie, St Albans – I support the call from the St Albans Residents Association for more public transport and cycling options and not spending $76m on delivering more traffic more efficiently into upper Cranford St to the detriment of St Albans and the city. I made a verbal submission last year making the same protest to the Canterbury Regional Council, the city council, New Zealand Transport Agency and the city council Northern Arterial Corridor Project RMA applications and hearing. We need more people in the city, we don’t need more cars. I suggest that the Northern Arterial and Cranford St road upgrade options ignore history and international developments in transport planning for cities. There has been a strong public lobby, post-earthquakes, for improved public transport, for a pedestrian and cyclistfriendly city. The concept of delivering a greater number of cars to mid-Cranford St and then having the drivers sort themselves out from there to their various city destinations is, in my view, counter to the concepts expressed by residents and captured in the vision of ‘An Accessible City’.

A reader responds to a recent article about a camera being used to deter clients visiting sex workers in a suburban setting: Mae Kiely, city centre – “If we can get them to move back into the city centre it will make both parties happier”, quote from city councillor Ali Jones. The article was advocating to get sex workers to relocate back into the city centre and out of the suburbs and therefore away from the people and children living in those suburbs. What about the people and children living in the city centre? Don’t we matter? Just get the sex workers out of your area. Too bad if you happen to live in the city centre, is that the approach? We live around the corner from the Margaret Mahy playground where hundreds of children come to play – and it’s my understanding that the council wants families to come back into the centre. I live on Peterborough St with my two children and we have neighbours with children. Are you really saying that it’s okay for sex workers to be around city centre children but not suburban children?

I was so shocked to read as much. “And the issue is not with prostitution itself, it is the noise, damage and rubbish that is left behind in a residential area” (Ali Jones). Again are you saying this is fine for city dwellers but not suburbanites? Gosh, the discrimination is mind blowing… I don’t like the activity happening on our street. Like Matt Bonis (of St Albans) said, we have found needles, our neighbours have had things stolen and our neighbours have been woken up in the middle of the night to find people having sex on their property. That’s not okay. But hang on, if it’s not okay for you, it’s not okay for us. I don’t know how to tackle this problem – it’s not easy. I don’t have the answers but I believe sex workers need to be supported. Ideally they would operate indoors somewhere. Just moving them onto another area doesn’t help – it just makes it worse for us as the numbers in the centre will increase. We should tackle the issue together, as a city and not just have the rich areas trying to offload it into less well off areas. “If we can get them to move back into the city centre it will make both parties happier.” Both parties? The only ones who will be happier are the St Albans residents. Not the sex workers and not the areas you

conveniently “relocate” them to. It’s very much a win-loose scenario. Let’s look for a better outcome. City councillor Ali Jones responds: Thanks for taking the time to write. I totally agree with you regarding “something needs to be done urgently – to help them and not just shove them around.” Pauline Cotter, police, myself, city council staff, the prostitutes collective and several social support agencies have been trying to find a resolution for almost three years, with work also having gone on before Cr Cotter and I were elected in October 2013. I am advised that the problem is the poor prostitute reform act legislation that was put in place by Tim Barnett.

In spite of assertions by the Labour and National Governments, local councils cannot put a bylaw in place because the legislation does not provide us with a strong enough foundation from which to draft a bylaw. We need to be confident that it can be enforced and be successfully defended in court. The cameras are achieving what no one has been able to, to date and that is one, deter activity that has made people’s lives a misery for years, and two, capture breaches of the summary offences act that would otherwise be missed to support any legal action that could be taken. I agree that we do not want to shift the problem into your backyard Mae and I would encourage you to contact your Christchurch Central MP

Nicky Wagner to implore her to champion a change in the PRA legislation, something I know she has tried already but in my opinion needs to be strongly promoted again. Then the city council as a local authority may have the foundation upon which to draft enabling us to enforce controls on where street prostitution can take place. If you have any ideas in the meantime, I’d love to hear them so please feel free to get in touch. We asked readers if they thought Bishopdale should have a direct bus line into the city centre. A reader responds: Una Atkins, Bishopdale – Living in Bishopdale, yes, buses go via Bishopdale but there is

9

nothing direct into the city. Being a low-socio economic area, a lot of people rely on the buses and it is quite frustrating having to walk either to Wairakei Rd or Harewood Rd. Not a lot of people have that pleasure if in ill health. The petition taken by the Bishopdale Community Centre was proof of this. However, I agree with Ms Smith that ECan had made up its mind before the petition was started. I know that residents of Bishopdale area rely on taxi’s. This is an expense in its own right and therefore a lot of the elderly are housebound. If a bus zig-zagged itself around the “outer” roads such as Breens Rd, Kilburn Stand wound round various other roads, as before, a lot more people would get out and about and enjoy the city. Good Luck to Ms Smith, I wish her well, but from the past, I doubt whether ECan will change it’s mind. All city residents of Christchurch should have access to decent routes into the city so they can go and explore the city or visit health establishments which are out of reach unless in an expensive taxi. Even if a bus left every hour from the Bishopdale Shopping Centre, that would improve things. Do it ECan!

Mr Chippindale said. Impressed with the overall quality of work, Chippindale also said now is the time for greater aspiration to be applied to the form of the developing city.

Well we had a lot to do with clearing liquefaction off the streets with the help of volunteers, the Student Volunteer Army and the Farmy Army. We made sure those people that needed help got it. How many people are involved in Volunteering Canterbury? There are only two paid workers full time, but there is another group of about 10 who help out voluntarily. They do store work, accounting, PR work, stores or expos, website, trust board, all kinds of things, whenever we needed something we knew where to find those people. Wow, sounds like you’ve had some busy days? It was always busy, always varied, and there was always something different every day. It keeps you on your toes. Did you still feel like that at the end of your 21 years? Yes, absolutely, I still feel like that, I had just had enough of full time work, so now I’m able to do other things which is great.

recognised but not finished Oh that’s good then. What do you do in your spare time now? I still actually do a bit of voluntary work, I chair the residents committee in the Avon Loop, and that’s with a lovely bunch of people too. At the moment we’re working hard to rebuild a local community centre. There’s seven on that committee, and others help around the place. I’ve been involved for quite a long time. But since the earthquake the need has become different for a lot of communities. We also have a community cottage that we maintain and rent out. With Volunteering Canterbury did your role change after the earthquake to more of an emergency recovery mode? Yes it did, in fact we had to put some of our policies to the side after earthquake. Because there were urgent things that had to happen right away, and a lot of informal volunteering took place. It was also a bit difficult in terms of health and safety with people going around those dangerous chimneys. Are you from Christchurch? I’ve been here for 30 years and I was also brought up here, so I’ve spent more than half my life here, but I was born in Auckland. I went to St Albans Primary School, and then

FAMILY TIME: Ruth Gardner and husband, the town crier, Stephen Symons, with their two adult daughters. Her daughters now both live in London, and work as a lawyer and an IT manager.

back to Auckland when I was about 10, and lived there for 20 something years, but now I love Christchurch and I wouldn’t leave. Oh that’s good to hear! What high school did you go to? Epsom Grammar in Auckland. I don’t have a degree but I did feminist studies at Canterbury University and a bit of study at

the polytechnic. And I’m actually a celebrant too, with the certificate and everything. Wow, you’re qualified all over the show. Well, when you’re in the voluntary sector you never know what will come in handy, and what different skills are useful. And now that you’ve retired from Volunteering Canterbury,

do you plan to do a bit more with your celebrant’s certificate? Oh yes, absolutely. Now that I’m retired I’m hoping to do more celebrants work. Do you know how many weddings you’ve done? Oh, I really don’t know. I’d say about 100 weddings, but a lot fewer since the earthquakes. But I’m hoping now to have more

time to do more weddings. I’m also a keen blogger, I write about anything that’s going on around here, and anything to do with the central city. I’ve been doing that for 10 years, and I have more than 1000 followers, which has taken a long time. But that’s on realruth. wordpress.com if you wanted to have a look. Very good, I definitely will. What are some other hobbies? I enjoy my garden and I write poetry. I write mainly rhyming poetry, I joined a group of women poets, and I like to walk and relax with friends. And are you married with kids? Yes, I’m married and two adult daughters who both live in England. Both near London, one is a lawyer and one is an IT manager. They’ve done very well, yes. And does your husband work still? Yes, he does – he’s actually the town crier. It makes for some interesting conversations for sure. He’s originally from England, but he’s been doing that for about 26 years. He started five years before me, to the day. He’s very keen to keep doing that. Where in the city are you based? We’re in one of the remaining little old cottages in the Avon Loop now.

ByGordonFindlater CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High will go into this week’s annual game against Christ’s College in fine form. The all boys’ school were too much for Lincoln High School at the weekend, dismissing the visitors 86-0 in a one-sided affair. After a slow start, including a loss to Marlborough Boys and draw with Nelson, Christchurch Boys appear to now be hitting their straps as they look to make it 16 consecutive wins over Christ’s. This year’s annual fixture has

been the most hyped in recent years with Christ’s College looking a different side from the one that lost 80-0 in last year’s fixture. Under the coaching guidance of former All Black captain Reuben Thorne and former Crusader Cameron McIntyre, Christ’s find themselves in an unfamiliar position at the top of the UC Championship. A 36-0 win over Roncalli at the weekend is the latest evidence to suggest 2016 is the school’s best chance in recent years of ending the drought which goes back to 2000.

St Andrew’s have retained the Moascar Cup, with a 10-10 draw on Saturday meaning the trophy will stay in Christchurch. A late try from Sam Gilbert was just enough for last year’s semi-finalists who are unbeaten through five games in this year’s championship. St Andrew’s face another tough test this weekend when they host defending champions St Bede’s. The 2015 champions had a victory in the latest round, a 28-8 win against Rangiora High moves them into the top half of the championship.

ut it is time to make a change and leave this spacious happy home of many years. You won’t want to miss out on this opportunity in the boutique subdivision of Broken Run. The cul-de-sac location is desirably tranquil, and this immaculately presented home will be a delight to view. Step into the entrance way and then onto the large well-appointed kitchen with quality Smeg appliances and large oven. The dining and family room are very spacious and have vaulted ceilings. The separate formal lounge with a cosy gas fire and family room have bifold doors that open onto the manicured garden, a wonderful prospect for summer entertaining. The master bedroom also opens as well to the garden - perhaps time for a coffee and croissant in the morning before the day begins? The ensuite is unusually large, a rare find in modern homes, and the family bathroom certainly does not lack in size as well. Two further double bedrooms and a large single will safely house the family and guests. The home is double glazed, fully insulated, has two heat pumps, a gas fire and under floor heating in the tiled kitchen and bathrooms. Air Force Band Flies High with the Queen THE ROYAL New Zealand Air Force Band is celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday in style with a special afternoon concert at the New Zealand Air Force Museum at Wigram on Sunday 5th June. Surrounded by the museum's mighty collection of Air Force history, the band will perform music that spans the nine decades of the Queen's life so far. The afternoon performance on June 5th features a segment dedicated to music by British composers, from Walton's stirring Crown Imperial March, to excerpts from popular musical theatre, through to the theme music for the James Bond 007 movies. During the RNZAF Band's last performance at the Air Force Museum in 2015, the band's 65 strong brass and woodwinds under the baton of Flight Lieutenant Brew received a standing ovation from the packed house. “We're looking forward to Walton's Crown Imperial March, and we'll also reference some great British artists including The Beatles, Queen and David Bowie,” Flight Lieutenant Brew said. “Our band is wonderfully versatile. We'll be taking the opportunity to feature some of our virtuoso players in solo pieces at Wigram.”

The Queen's Birthday concert programme will also include Gershwin's An American in Paris, Glinka's Russlan and Ludmila Overture, as well as a full symphonic version of the impressive soundtracks from the Star Wars movies. Flight Lieutenant Brew recently traveled with the NZ Defence Force Contingent to conduct services at Gallipoli. The RNZAF Band performed in February at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo during the NZ Festival in Wellington. Air Force Band in concert at the New Zealand Air Force Museum, Wigram th Sunday 5 June, 2pm, New Zealand Air Force Museum, Wigram. Adult: $25, Senior $22; Child/Student: $5 Tickets: New Zealand Air Force Museum (03) 343 - 9532.
